Piliavin et al. - Subway Samaritans

The study is interested in pro-social behaviour, notably bystander intervention in the case of a person falling down on a subway train.

The study was prompted by an incident  in New York City, where a woman was murdered in a noisy incident in the street but noone intervened to give her assistance or even call the police.

It is also one of the best exmaples of a field experiment, as it was conducted in a real life setting on a subway train with real passengers unaware that their behaviour was being observed.
